The solar transition region: a time-varying interface between the chromosphere and corona?

چکیده
Using joint observations taken with the CDS and SUMER instruments onboard SOHO, we re-examine the solar transition region in an attempt to determine whether it is de-coupled from the over-lying coronal region. Line ratios calculated from temporal series observations of O iv and Fe xiii spectral lines were converted to electron density, and hence electron pressure using theoretical line ratios. Little or no evidence was found to support the constant electron density assumption, and instead a constant electron pressure is found between the transition region and corona. This lends support to the idea that the transition region is a time varying interface between the chromosphere and corona, and is not formed in unresolved finestructures that are disconnected from the corona.

Damping of visco-resistive Alfven waves in solar spicules
Interaction of Alfven waves with plasma inhomogeneity generates phase mixing which can cause the dissipation of Alfven waves. We investigated the dissipation of standing Alfven waves due to phase mixing at the presence of steady flow and sheared magnetic field in solar spicules. Moreover, the transition region between chromosphere and corona was considered. Our numerical simulation showed that ...
متن کاملThe role of partial ionization effects in the chromosphere.
The energy for the coronal heating must be provided from the convection zone. However, the amount and the method by which this energy is transferred into the corona depend on the properties of the lower atmosphere and the corona itself. We review: (i) how the energy could be built in the lower solar atmosphere, (ii) how this energy is transferred through the solar atmosphere, and (iii) how the ...

We revisit in more detail a model for element abundance fractionation in the solar chromosphere, that gives rise to the “FIP Effect” in the solar corona and wind. Elements with first ionization potential below about 10 eV, i.e. those that are predominantly ionized in the chromosphere, are enriched in the corona by a factor 3-4. We model the propagation of Alfvén waves through the chromosphere u...
متن کاملHeating events in the quiet solar corona: multiwavelength correlations
Coronal, transition region and chromospheric lines and centimeter radio emission of the quiet Sun have been simultaneously observed by SoHO and the VLA. The corona above the magnetic network has a higher pressure and is more variable than above the interior of supergranular cells. The Fourier transform in time is found to have steeper spectra in the corona and upper chromosphere than in the tra...
متن کاملCoronal heating in coupled photosphere-chromosphere-coronal systems: turbulence and leakage
Context. Coronal loops act as resonant cavities for low-frequency fluctuations that are transmitted from the deeper layers of the solar atmosphere. These fluctuations are amplified in the corona and lead to the development of turbulence that in turn is able to dissipate the accumulated energy, thus heating the corona. However, trapping is not perfect, because some energy leaks down to the chrom...
